A new month, and hopefully warmer weather is upon us. I’m still wearing sweaters, which is not okay in May. I’m also in a reading slump, so I’m optimistic that this month will help me kick that and get going on lots and lots of books again.
In addition to finishing the three books I’m stuck in the middle of, here’s what I’m reading this month:
Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid
If anything can knock me out of a slump, TJR can and I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about this novel since it came out! It’s been on my shelf since I got my March BOTM box, so it’s about time.
Daisy is a girl coming of age in L.A. in the late sixties, sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming of singing at the Whisky a Go Go. The sex and drugs are thrilling, but it’s the rock and roll she loves most. By the time she’s twenty, her voice is getting noticed, and she has the kind of heedless beauty that makes people do crazy things.
Also getting noticed is The Six, a band led by the brooding Billy Dunne. On the eve of their first tour, his girlfriend Camila finds out she’s pregnant, and with the pressure of impending fatherhood and fame, Billy goes a little wild on the road.
Daisy and Billy cross paths when a producer realizes that the key to supercharged success is to put the two together. What happens next will become the stuff of legend.
The making of that legend is chronicled in this riveting and unforgettable novel, written as an oral history of one of the biggest bands of the seventies. Taylor Jenkins Reid is a talented writer who takes her work to a new level with Daisy Jones & The Six, brilliantly capturing a place and time in an utterly distinctive voice.
Little Bee by Chris Cleave
Speaking of books that have been on my shelf for a while, this one has probably been hiding out for two years. I got a copy at a used book sale, and now that it’s been chosen as our book club’s June pick, I have no excuse but to get it out of permanent TBR land. It’s description is super vague, so I’m interested to see what I’m getting into…
From the author of the international bestseller Incendiary comes a haunting novel about the tenuous friendship that blooms between two disparate strangers—one an illegal Nigerian refugee, the other a recent widow from suburban London.
The Woman in the White Kimono by Ana Johns
I was given the opportunity to be on this novel’s blog tour, and I thought the concept sounded interesting. I’m looking forward to diving into it soon and finding something delicious to cook with it.
Japan, 1957. Seventeen-year-old Naoko Nakamura’s prearranged marriage to the son of her father’s business associate would secure her family’s status in their traditional Japanese community, but Naoko has fallen for another man—an American sailor, a gaijin—and to marry him would bring great shame upon her entire family. When it’s learned Naoko carries the sailor’s child, she’s cast out in disgrace and forced to make unimaginable choices with consequences that will ripple across generations.
America, present day. Tori Kovac, caring for her dying father, finds a letter containing a shocking revelation—one that calls into question everything she understood about him, her family and herself. Setting out to learn the truth behind the letter, Tori’s journey leads her halfway around the world to a remote seaside village in Japan, where she must confront the demons of the past to pave a way for redemption.
In breathtaking prose and inspired by true stories from a devastating and little-known era in Japanese and American history, The Woman in the White Kimono illuminates a searing portrait of one woman torn between her culture and her heart, and another woman on a journey to discover the true meaning of home.

_______________
TBR Mix ‘n’ Mingle is hosted by Rachel at Never Enough Novels, Allison at My Novel Life, the other wonderful bloggers at Literary Quicksand, and myself. In the bookish community, TBR stands for “To Be Read,” but it can mean different things to different people; in fact, Book Riot has a wonderful post exploring all the possible definitions. To me, it just means a book I haven’t read but want to read eventually. We share our TBR Lists on the 1st of every month. We'd love for you to join us!

Hope you can end your reading slump! I wasn't a fan of Little Bee but I know lots of others are so hopefully you fall into the latter category 🙂
